Trade routes once shaped settlements and metropolitan areas. The Hellweg, a central European trade route, connected the cities of today's Ruhrgebiet early on, and its name is still present in streets today.
The circular tour begins at Unna railroad station, which is well connected to the regional rail network. From Unna, the route leads eastwards along former Hellweg sections before branching off to the south.
The route crosses the Haarstrang, a hill north of the Ruhr. The route demands metres of elevation gain, but opens up far-reaching panoramas that allow views as far as the Sauerland on a clear day. A descent leads into the Ruhrtal near Wickede.
The Ruhr, once an elementary trade corridor whose towpaths the RuhrtalRadweg now follows along the banks, accompanies the tour to Fröndenberg/Ruhr. There, the chainsmith museum offers insights into traditional craftsmanship. The journey continues through agricultural landscapes and past farmsteads.
Another challenging climb leads up the Ardeygebirge to Opherdicke. The Wasserschloß Haus Opherdicke, which dates back to 1176, rises up here. It houses exhibition and gallery spaces, complemented by chamber concerts.
The route returns to Unna through a varied natural backdrop. The Center for International Light Art in the former Lindenbrauerei brewery presents unique installations by renowned light artists. The Altstadt attracts visitors with its diverse gastronomy, and the "Un(n)a Festa Italiana" event characterizes the urban flair every two years.
